Italy, like other modern European countries is creating a new national identity, one that includes “others”. Turkish director Ferzan Ozpetik gives us the penetrating and touching La Finestra di Fronte, which explores Italy beginning to realize that minorities now represent a large part of who they are.

Giovanna, the heroine of the film, takes in an old man, Davide (played by the late Massimo Girotti), she finds wandering the streets searching for who he is. Davide’s Jewish background represses him even in the present day, as does his love for Simone from is past. This secret relationship runs parallel to Giovanna’s attraction to her neighbor Lorenzo, who she observes through their facing windows.

Looking into a window is looking into a personal space, and Ozpetek uses this to show the secrets we hold. La Finestra di Fronte provides Italy with a reason to believe that open sexuality, nor multicultural relationships, should be considered taboo.
